A blood culture test is used to detect the presence of foreign organisms such as bacteria and other microorganisms in the blood. The presence of these disease-causing agents in the bloodstream can indicate a blood infection, a condition known as bacteremia. A positive blood culture result indicates the presence of bacteria in the blood.
